Many telecoms consumers resident in Oyo State have hailed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for its continuous sensitisation of consumers on the challenges of cybercrime and how the Commission is educating the consumers on online protection.

The consumers expressed their appreciation at the 53rd Edition of the Consumer Town Hall Meeting (CTM) which took place at Ilora, in Oyo State on Thursday, September 19, 2019. The theme of the Outreach focused on the role role of the consumers in mitigating the effects of cybercrimes.

The forum provided opportunity for the consumers of telecom services to be enlightened on the menace of cybercrime, its manifestations and ramifications as well as their role in terms of being equipped with some tips that will keep them safe while on the Internet.

Addressing participants at the event, Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, NCC, Felicia Onwuegbuchulam, stressed the need for consumers to comply with basic Internet etiquettes and be disciplined, saying only through the exercise of discretions and restraints can Nigerian businesses and individual Internet users be protected from activities of Internet hackers.

Represented by Ismail Adedigba, Head, Information and Reference, NCC, Onwuegbuchulam also warned telecommunications consumers, to desist from unwholesome practice of indulging in cybercrimes and activities that could bring the country into disrepute through their activities in the cyberspace.

According to Onwuegbuchulam, Internet users also need to be cautious of the type of information they post online. She also advised telecom consumers to imbibe responsible online and phone etiquettes.

The well-attended forum featured artisans of all trades, civil servants, representatives of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), personnel from security agencies as well as community leaders.
